Why we built Whitewash
19 July 2026Whitewash started with a simple question: why isn't there a cricket game that lets you build a team from the stars of the sport's history?
Fantasy cricket exists, but it's built around live fixtures, current players, and points systems tied to real-world performance. We wanted something more open, more exploratory. A simple game that allows you to draft some of the biggest names across cricket history, into an ultimate XI.
The idea
Rather than letting you hand-pick your perfect team freely, the wheel forces constraint. You don't get to choose your nation or your era. You get what you're dealt, and you build the best XI you can from it. This forces players to be intentional about their drafting, and allows for unlimited possibilities.
The name came from the cricket term for winning every match in a series - a whitewash. Build an XI good enough to clean sweep a series.
What went into it
Player ratings are calculated from historical career statistics. Every player's rating reflects their actual record: batting average, bowling average, caps earned. This is based on real data.
The One Day conditions mechanic came from wanting the format to feel meaningfully different from Test. In Test, you're chasing the best XI possible. In One Day, you're chasing the best XI for a specific pitch, sky, and forecast. That small addition changes how you draft considerably.
Where it's headed
Whitewash is a work in progress. The current game covers men's Test and One Day cricket. T20, women's cricket, additional eras, and more nations are things we want to explore. The squad data is updated regularly as new players join the historical pool.
If you've played a few games and have thoughts, we'd genuinely like to hear them. The contact details are on the About page.
